Launch of the Guiding Principles on Menstrual Health - DSK 14/26 - Danske Bank NI

14 October 2026

DSK 14/26

Financial Services Union are delighted to announce the launch of the Bank’s Guiding Principles on Menstrual Health; a significant achievement negotiated between your Union and Danske Bank and reflecting the shared commitment to support staff.

This initiative was brought to the Bank by the FSU as a core component of FSU’s #StopTheStigma Campaign. The campaign was designed to raise awareness around menstrual health in the workplace and to seek meaningful supports for workers experiencing difficult periods, as well as robust provisions for those living with serious period-related illnesses.

We are pleased to confirm that, following constructive engagement, the Bank has committed to implementing these Guiding Principles.

While the full Guiding Principles will be circulated upon launch and will be available on the Bank’s portal, we wish to draw your attention to a number of key highlights:

  • Flexible Working

Danske Bank has an established Flexible Working Policy for permanent changes to contract, but should a staff member require a more temporary / flexible change, working arrangements could include earlier start times and finish times to avoid peak travel times, or more breaks away from their computer. These should be discussed and agreed with the colleague’s People Leader and reviewed on a regular basis.

  • Benenden Support

Staff will have access to diagnosis for conditions such as endometriosis to include laparoscopy procedures. This represents a vital step forward in ensuring that those suffering from often debilitating menstrual health conditions receive the professional high-quality healthcare they deserve.

  • Treatment of Absence

Absence directly relating to a diagnosed menstrual health condition may now be recorded separately from general sickness absence and disregarded for the purposes of absence triggers. This is a crucial development in removing the stigma and anxiety often associated with taking time off due to menstrual health issues.

The Bank has also given commitment on guidance for people leaders. These Guiding Principles will be launched today.

This is a win for all our members. It demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together to challenge stigma and demand better workplace supports. We encourage all members to familiarise themselves with these new provisions once launched.
