Support a fully funded DEXA screening program for women over 50

Women over 50 face a steep rise in osteoporosis risk due to postmenopausal estrogen decline, which accelerates bone loss - often silently until a fracture occurs.

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scans are the gold standard for measuring bone mineral density, catching osteopenia and osteoporosis before breaks happen.

Because hip and spine fractures at this age can cause lasting disability and increased mortality, routine DEXA screening is essential for guiding preventive treatment and protecting long-term mobility and independence.

Government should therefore roll out a funded DEXA screening program for women over 50, since early detection is far cheaper than the hospital, surgical, and long-term care costs of preventable fractures - making it a sound investment in both public health and public finances.

Supporting women throughout their working lives

FSU represents employees in financial services, fintech and tech across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. We campaign on the issues that affect women at work and in their wider lives—because fair pay, career opportunities, health and wellbeing all matter.

Our campaign for funded DEXA screening is part of that commitment. We bring women’s concerns to employers and politicians, organise for change and work to secure practical supports when they are needed.

Together, we make change happen

Women are at the heart of FSU. By organising together, our members have helped us successfully negotiate policies with employers on menstrual health, pregnancy loss and parental leave. These are practical changes that recognise women’s experiences and make a difference in their working lives.

When you join FSU, you strengthen that collective voice. You also have a union alongside you throughout your career, working for better pay and opportunities, representing your interests and supporting you when you need advice.

Take the first step

If you are not yet an FSU member and have a concern about an employment issue, we offer a free, confidential, 15-minute one-to-one session with a member of our professional Advice Centre team.

For members, that support is ongoing: our Advice Centre is there whenever you need it.
