Constructive dialogue held on issues in the Banking Sector - FSU

John O’Connell. General Secretary of the Financial Services Union (FSU) has described today’s meeting between the Taoiseach and the Financial Service Union as constructive and informative.

Commenting after the meeting Mr O’Connell said:

“I very much appreciate the Taoiseach taking the time to meet with the FSU and participating in a discussion about the current and long-term issues facing the Banking sector in Ireland.

The Taoiseach re- iterated the stance of his Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe that a review of the Banking sector was needed. We look forward to further dialogue with the Minster for Finance and participating in the scheduled review.

We also had an opportunity to discuss the recent announcement by KBC and their failure to engage with the Union or confirm the application of TUPE to its staff. We also discussed the looming branch closures scheduled by Bank of Ireland against the backdrop of the necessity of the Bank to support the SME sector as we recover from the pandemic. The Taoiseach was clearly well briefed on the issues and shared many of our concerns.

It is only with real dialogue between all relevant stakeholders that the needs of customers, staff, the Government and the Banks can be addressed” concluded Mr O’Connell.
