Financial Services Union welcome announcement from Finance Minister in Northern Ireland to hold a roundtable discussion on the future of Banking in Northern Ireland.

John O’Connell, General Secretary of the Financial Services Union has welcomed the announcement today by the finance minister in Northern Ireland, Conor Murphy MLA that he will hold a roundtable discussion on the future of Banking in Northern Ireland in the new year.

Speaking at the triennial conference of the Financial Services Union in Belfast John O’Connell said.

“Today’s announcement by the Minister for Finance in Northern Ireland is a very welcome development.

The FSU have called for a banking forum both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland over the last twelve months.

Minister Murphy has consistently supported the concept of stakeholder dialogue and we applaud him on this innovative approach to developing a future vision for the sector.

I commend Minister Murphy’s commitment to an open and transparent roundtable process where all relevant stakeholders will have a say on the future of Banking in Northern Ireland.

Retail Banking is undergoing enormous change at the moment, and we need to ensure that the voice of stakeholders as well as the voice of shareholders is heard.

The FSU look forward to participating in the discussions in the new year with active engagement from all stakeholders.

Minister Murphy’s announcement compliments the publication earlier this week by the Minister for Finance in the Republic of Ireland of terms of reference for a Banking review in the Republic of Ireland.
