PAYE workers cannot be left behind by employers and Government
The Financial Services Union (FSU) have today called on Financial Services and Fintech employers to provide meaningful supports to help their workers with the rising cost of living.
At a special delegate conference of FSU members today, John O’Connell, General Secretary of the FSU together with Owen Reidy, General Secretary of ICTU launched the results of an FSU petition signed by 5000 workers from across the sectors demanding additional supports for workers.
Speaking at the launch John O’Connell, General Secretary of the FSU said:
“Food prices are up; fuel costs are up and affording the cost of heating your home has become problematic for many people. Rents where workers can find accommodation are spiraling out of control. Many workers are struggling to make ends meet and require assistance now.
We are calling on profitable employers to show leadership and compassion and introduce immediate measures that will support their workers through the current turmoil.
5000 workers have signed our petition. These workers are struggling to live on their current pay and conditions. They need and deserve support.
Many employers are making enormous profits, drawing huge salaries and paying large dividends to their shareholders. In2024 the 21 long-standing bosses of the largest Irish publicly quoted companies, had average pay packages that rose by 31 per cent to €4.36 million.
The FSU are asking that the bosses in the sector prioritise their workforce, provide meaningful supports and assist their workers at this crucial moment.
The FSU will continue our dialogue with the retail banks and other financial institutions over the coming weeks to ensure the sentiments expressed through the petition are heard loud and clear in boardrooms across the FinTech and Financial Services sector.”
Commenting Owen Reidy, General Secretary of ICTU said:
"Workers are bearing the full brunt of this cost-of-living crisis while watching profitable employers post record dividends. There is no justification for that. Employers in financial services and fintech have both the means and the moral obligation to act now and support their employees.
Thousands of workers have signed the FSU petition because they are feeling the pressure of the spiralling cost of living. They are sending a clear message, and Congress stands fully behind the FSU in making that message heard."
