Initial Advice for FSU members 'level red' weather alert

Issued : 28 February 2018

Initial weather advisory for FSU members:

Due to the heavy snowfalls overnight Met Éireann has issued a ‘level red’ weather alert for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath.

A ‘level orange’ alert is in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wexford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford

Some employers have taken a decision to close specific operations in these counties which is welcome.  Other employers have informed staff to attend.

Our initial advice for staff expected to attend a workplace is:

If it dangerous or unsafe for you to travel to work inform your line manager that you made a bona fide attempt to reach work but it is not possible due to weather conditions.  Ask your line manager about options to work remotely.

We are also aware that a number of schools in these counties will not open and school transport is severely curtailed.  This may present urgent childcare issues for staff.  If this is the case inform your line manager and request ‘Urgent Family Leave’ (formerly called force majeure leave).  Note that ‘Urgent Family Leave’ is limited, for example, to three days in a 12 month period.

We will update you further as the situation develops.
